Beard Care Basics: A Starter Guide

A good beard is not luck, it is routine. The bad news: it will not tidy itself. The good news: five minutes a day is plenty, once you know what matters.

Washing: less often than you think

A beard is not scalp hair. Daily shampoo dries it out — two or three washes a week are enough, ideally with a gentle, beard-specific wash. On other days, clean water and a thorough rinse do the job.

Oil: the one step that matters most

If you use a single product, make it beard oil. It is not really for the hair — it is for the skin underneath, which itches, flakes and dandruffs without it. Once a day, into a towel-dry beard, a few drops: spread it on your palms and work it in from underneath, so it reaches the skin.

Balm: for styling and longer beards

From roughly a month’s growth, a balm earns its place: the beeswax gives hold, the butters soften. It is the balm — not the oil — that disciplines stray, sideways-growing hairs.

Comb or brush?

For short beards, a boar-bristle brush — it distributes the oil and trains the hair’s direction. For longer ones, a wide-toothed comb, always starting from the ends and working upwards. A metal comb is not snobbery: it does not build up static the way plastic does.

The lines: worth leaving to a professional

The cheek line and the neckline decide whether a beard reads as groomed or neglected — and they are precisely the hardest thing to get right at home, in a mirror, with your hands moving backwards. A professional shape-up holds its form for weeks; at home you only maintain it. That is what our beard trim is for: we work with razor, scissors and clippers, matched to your beard’s length and your face.

The minimal routine

Morning: a few drops of oil, a brush-through. Two or three times a week: a wash. Monthly: a trim. That is all — genuinely no more than five minutes a day.
